Dr. Ayers grew up in both Noxen and Wilkes-Barre. He graduated from Coughlin High School, King’s College, and the University of Pennsylvania. He was well-regarded as possessing a wealth of knowledge about gardening, barns, cows, medicine, history, and just about everything in between. Dr. Ayers loved to teach others and improve their lives. Just as notable was his kind demeanor. Dr. Ayers was a Christian and exemplified what it means to "love thy neighbor." He made everyone around him feel important.
In addition to providing the NEPA area with outstanding veterinary care, Dr. Ayers helped establish the North Branch Land Trust to conserve rural scenic lands from becoming over-developed. In 2009, he created The Lands at Hillside Farms which is a non-profit educational dairy farm. He was able to save the 412 acre, historic farm which now teaches sustainable life choices. Dr. Ayers orchestrated many complex business deals, yet was not afraid to get his boots muddy.
Dr. Ayers passed away in 2017 after a long illness. His absence leaves an empty space in the lives of the many people who loved him. His legacy is truly stunning. If we all worked as hard as Dr. Ayers, and cared about others and our resources the way he did, our world would truly be a remarkable place.
